How do you put acoustic guitar chords to a melody you've written?

I've only been play guitar for a couple months so I don't know much
about chord structure. I wrote a melody that I really enjoy singing,
but I don't understand how you put chords to match it. I know the most
popular ones are G, C, and D, and those are the only ones I know but I
will learn more soon. Thanks!
